Family approach

The Go4it! project is unique to any other local healthy lifestyle project, as we work with our families on a 1:1 basis to create a personalised action plan which includes setting their own goals about what changes they want to make to enable them and their families, live a healthier lifestyle. We do this by home visits we like to call ‘Sofa Coaching’. This element of Go4it! is a series of home visits to build relationships with the families, our coordinators work closely alongside them to help them achieve their goals.

Go4it! will give any support needed to help reduce any barriers to achieving this goal. This could include financial support, researching and booking appropriate sessions, buying necessary kit or accompanying those who are initially less confident to sessions. The coordinator will also refer the family to the Go4it! dietitian and the stress relief element o f the project if extra support is needed. We continue to support and motivate families through texts, phone calls and home visits.

Supporting families becoming more active

During the ‘sofa coaching sessions our coordinators work to gain an idea of what different sports/ activities the families would like to try. The coordinator will then research and find out what activities and sports are available locally for the families to try. The coordinator will then contact the sports or activity provider and book the family into the session.

Eating Healthier

Through the in the home (“sofa coaching”) sessions we also look to refer families to our Go4it! dietician. Not only does the dietitian work 1:1 with families to make small sustainable changes (which they choose) to the families diet. The dietitian also provides short interactive ‘learning’ sessions at our physical activity events. This encourages children from a young age to think about their diet, hydration needs and even how their digestive system works.

Here are a few example of how we have already helped families:

Community approach

The project delivers a variety of sports taster sessions within local community settings to promote sport/ physical activities which are available locally. By using local providers, it not only helps families to try something new, it increases confidence in attending more ‘mainstream’ sport sessions and helps to support local clubs and facilities. To complement the in- home sessions with our dietitian we also run in partnership with Cooking Together Wales a variety of different family cooking sessions which help to encourage families to cook together by educating about child safe roles in the kitchen and teaching essential skills. All recipes are healthy, quick, easy and delicious!!

Go4it! also provides families with the opportunity to have sessions with our ‘stress relief guru’. Not only can she give a great shoulder massage, she can help parents to cope better in stressful situations by giving practical tips and changing negative mind-sets. We also refer families into other mainstream services available locally such as courses provided by Valleys Steps and New Horizons.
